Documentary & Editorial Wedding Photography

What does documentary mean in wedding photography?

It’s a bit different for each photographer. Each has their own perspective and approach, but for me it means to interrupt your day as little as possible. Let the events unfold naturally and document the day as it is.

Then what about editorial? What is the difference?

Editorial is a fancy way of saying curating a story, a visual narrative.

When these two things come together you have a personal narrative. Something captured from the point of view of your photographer that is strictly dedicated to serving you and your wedding day. Nothing overly posed, nothing forced, and your day captured as it was.

Other great words to describe this style/approach are: candid, photojournalistic, unposed, genuine…etc.

These two a styles come together for me by making sure to direct you and/or myself in the best locations, spots, have the best perspective…etc within a room for composition and lighting, and letting you live your day. This way, the best images can be produced without influencing your actions, your mood, your family, or your friends in ways they do not wish to be. I step in a direct more when need be and when asked, of course. There are a lot of moving parts on a wedding day and sometimes it is nice to be guided by the perspective of the photographer to ensure you look your best and get the most out of their artistic vision.

I love this approach to a wedding day because it creates images that bring back the feelings…put you right back into a moment. I want the nostalgia can be palpable. These are real life things happening, its not about a photoshoot, its about the people and the love…the best images are captured when you let your day unfold naturally and give your photographer the freedom to capture it authentically, creating art specifically for you. I am not here for the perfectly posed, I am here to capture the big moments and the little ones in between, the moments that matter.
